Magical fairy gardens

Today we are sharing some ideas for your kids to create their own magical fairy gardens at home using eco-friendly materials.

make your own fairy garden

Fairy gardens are great for:

  • getting kids in the garden, learning about different plants, and connecting them with nature
  • fine motor skills development – putting in plants, making and placing miniature features
  • engineering – planning the garden layout, adding water features, designing paths
  • maths – measuring the size of the garden, tracking growth of plants, counting the individual items
  • imaginary play – making up stories about the fairies and other creatures in the garden
  • sensory play – hands in the dirt, fragrances of the plants, textures of the different natural materials

Here are some ideas for things your kids can use to make their own fairy gardens:

  • bases: wooden barrels, raised garden beds/planters, terracotta pots and saucers, bird baths, old saucepans, shallow baskets, tea cups and saucers, recycled containers
  • plants: herbs, succulents, grasses, flowers, moss, ground covers
  • fairy houses: wooden bird houses, shell houses, ceramic/glass houses
  • fairies: peg dolls and felt
  • accessories: tree stumps/branches/sticks/twigs/rounds/bark, pine cones, shells, decorative gravel/pebbles/rocks/stones, glass gems/sea glass, miniature furniture (wooden, metal or ceramic), string/wool/yarn, felt/fabric bunting, mini wooden pegs, craft sticks, solar LED fairy lights
